Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers!
We believe there’s no such thing as a stupid question – chances are, we’ve heard it before so we compiled a FAQ page for quick answers. We’re ready for the challenge if you haven’t found answers to your questions. Let’s see what you’ve got!
1. What do the symbols mean?
Traditional Croatian tattoos are rooted in universal symbols that connect us with nature, community, and ourselves.
• Cross, Circle, Line: Foundations of every design
• Wheel: Represents unity, totality, and the boundless nature of divinity.
• Fence: A symbol of protection and boundaries.
• Bracelet: Signifies sanctuary, community, and belonging.
• Fir Tree: Represents longevity, immortality, and fertility.
• Stalk: Symbolizes personal strength, stamina, and willpower.
These symbols evolved through centuries, shifting from protective marks to rites of passage – and today, as timeless art rich in history. Read more in the About section.
2. How long do temporary tattoos last?
Up to 7 days with proper care. Longevity depends on skin type, weather conditions, and care. Oily skin or excessive sweating may reduce wear. Check the care tips in your brochure to make them last longer.
3. How do I apply the tattoos?
It’s as easy as stick-on tattoos in gum packs – our process captures that same magic! Follow the simple graphic guide in your brochure, apply with water, and enjoy. You’ll also get aftercare tips to keep it looking fresh.
4. Where can I buy your tattoos?
You can shop on our Etsy shop (we ship worldwide!) or find us in these local shops:
• Zagreb: Take Me Home, J. E. Tomića 4
• Zadar: Liliput, Varoška ulica 5
• Pirovac: Lily & Scooter, Mala ulica 2b
• Rijeka: Croatia in a Box, Grivica ulica 6A
• Pula: La Amisha, Smareglina 7
• Vis (Komiža): Barilac, Ribarska ulica 12
In stores, you’ll find premade packages. Online, you can create your own custom collection.
5. Can I order a custom tattoo?
Not at the moment, but we’d love to hear your ideas! Your suggestions inspire future designs, so don’t be shy – reach out!
6. Do you create permanent tattoos?
Nope. We love the idea of temporary art—like jewellery for your skin. Beautiful, versatile, and ever-changing.
7. Why call them Croatian when “sicanje” was mostly practiced in Bosnia & Herzegovina?
Great question. After thorough research and talks with historians, we’ve learned that this tattooing tradition was exclusively practiced by Catholic women in Bosnia & Herzegovina, who identified as Croatian. Similar techniques also existed in Croatian regions like Lika and Dalmatia but didn’t survive as long as in B&H. Our goal isn’t to exclude but to honour the shared cultural history of the region. This tradition belongs to all who carried it forward.
